The Thirteen Grandmothers – A Brief Introduction

The Thirteen Grandmothers embody universal feminine wisdom and the many spiritual faces of the Great Mother. Together, they form a sacred circle of feminine qualities, inner strengths, and timeless teachings. (Art Grandmother: Nicolette van den Hadelkamp)
.
The ancient teachings and spiritual life lessons of the Thirteen Original Grandmothers are a universal Truth… They are a Gift from Spirit on your Sacred Path, guiding you back to your inner gifts that hold the power to heal the Self. These are the talents, qualities, and potentials of the feminine essence.
.
The third book of Cosmic Woman serves as a handbook, where you will find a more in-depth description of the Thirteen Grandmothers. For now, I offer you a short introduction to their energy, love, and wisdom – along with a gentle inner visualization to help you connect with their Spirit Council.
.
I have also included the Thirteen Moons as they feel true to me. However, because we in the Western world follow a twelve-moon calendar, you may notice that things begin to shift when you attune to the thirteen-moon rhythm. This means the Grandmothers do not fall rigidly within fixed months. A helpful guide is this: Spring represents the Thirteenth Grandmother, and from there, each New Moon invites you into a new Grandmother energy. Ultimately, you may come to feel that everything exists in the present moment, and when you align your inner rhythm with what feels natural to you, the Thirteen Grandmothers move with your flow. In other words: energy is not fixed, but fluid – like water.
.
I experience myself as a torchbearer of the teachings of Jamie Sams. I build upon her book The Thirteen Original Clan Mothers, which is available in English. It is my intention to remain as close as possible to the purity of her teachings, while allowing the wisdom of the Grandmothers to expand and evolve. Perhaps you, too, feel the Calling to become a messenger for the Thirteen Grandmothers, and new wisdom will reveal itself through you. In this way, their teachings remain alive and ever-moving.
.
Throughout this book, you will often encounter the term women medicine. Every form of life carries medicine within it. All life matters; everything has a role within the greater whole. All of creation holds both the masculine and the feminine… and therefore, all life carries women medicine. This is the unseen creative, life-giving principle connected to the eternal golden flame of Love. When you begin to live in alignment with this wisdom, you step into your Sacred Space – your Medicine Wheel – connected to the sun that you are, and you begin to experience your connection with the natural world once more.
.
The Women Medicine of the Thirteen Grandmothers supports you in honoring who you are and why you are here. It clarifies your Sacred Path on Mother Earth, as you come to understand your place within the whole of Creation. This medicine is connected to the Medicine Wheel of the Thirteen Original Grandmothers, who embody the gifts, talents, and potentials of the feminine principle. Each Grandmother carries her own unique medicine and brings you into contact with your own.

A Simple Attunement to the Grandmothers

Close your eyes for a moment.
Take a slow breath in… and gently out.

Imagine yourself standing in a sacred circle.
The Earth beneath you feels warm and alive.

Around you, you sense their presence—
the Thirteen Grandmothers.

You do not need to see them clearly.
Simply feel… that they are here.

Now softly ask within:
“Grandmothers, I am here. Walk with me.”

Notice what arises.
A feeling, a word, a color, a silence.

Trust that this is enough.

Take another breath…
and carry their presence with you as you return.
